Who remembers cutting the lawn with shears? It was hard work. Love this, Abbey Wood my home village, just 4 years old and popping down to the shops, over the tracks, on the bridge, smelling the oil and the steam as the train chuffed past, going up to the woods and making dams in the stream, how beautiful it was. It doesn't matter if things have changed, the feeling is still there. Along the way we have thrown the baby out with the bath water and forgot about the heart, we haven't realized how far away we have gone from our true home the heart. I hope we can some day start to go back.

Unless you lived through those times you won't understand the affection my generation hold them plus the wonderful music played on family favourite s every Sunday while mum cooked the roast

My grandfather worked at the WA during both wars. He rarely spoke about it but one story he told was being there overnight and the sirens started. All lights went off and people ran and hid under tables as it was too late to get to the bunkers. He looked up through the glazed roof and could see the spot lights and bombers overhead. Then looked down at the explosives all around him. The people under the tables were telling him to take cover but he told them to go away (in strong language), if they got hit, crouching under a table wasn’t going help. This recording has really helped me understand that story! He went home to Welling in the morning to find his house had been bombed but luckily my Nan survived

I miss the old bowling grounds. They did nothing with that space apart fill it with concreate. The lido and paddling pool is still there and is still a great place to swim or paddle in the summer. Woolwich is currently undergoing a massive regeneration project with scores of "luxury" unaffordable flats around the bottom near the ferry. The problem is they got rid of all, but one of the hospitals and none of the tower blocks have any parking.

I worked in the Royal Arsenal in 1945 as as Messenger Boy aged 14 years, in the Metallurgy Laboratory and learnt quite a lot of the dissolving in nitric acid of German gun samples to find their composition and well remember the Locomotives hauling huge gun barrels about also the huge lathes for turning to size. I used to get a workers tram at the old Welcome Inn Eltham and get a boys workers return ticket for 2 1/2 Imperial Pennies (about 1 1/4 pence) My pay was 16 shillings a week (80 new pence) for a 44 hour week, 5 1/2 day week!. One day a week was spent at the Day Continuation School part of Woolwich Polytechnic. My father was at the time a fitter in the Royal Gun Factory and was wounded in the neck when his workshop was hit by a V2 rocket. All he can recall is a brilliant flash and waking up in the Royal Herbert Hospital, he was very lucky.. I never saw my father at work as he worked odd shift hours and in his spare time he was in the Home Guard manning the rocket anti aircraft launchers on Blackheath. Happy Days and memories of those far off days!

I wonder how much of the fireplaces and clocks survived, I worked on the Arsenal as a dog handler in the early 90s and we patrolled around Belmarsh perimeter until they got their own dogs..I wish I was a film maker back then so much history I could have documented...
